MAPS AND MEMORIES

In November 2006, I was invited to visit Zebqine, a village in southern Lebanon that was heavily impacted by the war with Israel during the summer. A youth group in town agreed to collaborate with me to make images of the impact of war on their village. Each participant drew a map of the village as it was when she was a child and marked where one of her memories occurred on that map. We went as a group to the site of the memory and the participant reenacted the memory. Another participant made a Polaroid picture of the reenactment. We installed the resulting Polaroid-memory into the landscape and rephotographed it.

Participants also photographed their favorite places, from before and after the war, and installed them in the landscape. As well, I photographed some of what I saw in Zebqine. When I visited several months later, many of the houses that were destroyed had been rebuilt and most of the young people I worked with were in school in Tyre and Beirut.
