ABUL THONA BARAKA: A traveling coffee ceremony
Project Statement

Media: Custom-built metal stands produced by Ethiopian metalsmiths, Weatherproof photographic banners printed by an Ethiopian printer, Laminated gelatin silver and inkjet prints, 2 Peer facilitators, Coffee. Transported by light pick-up truck. Installed in 4 meter diameter circle in various locations throughout Ethiopia.

An installation of Sudden Flowers’ photographs and texts that toured cities and villages throughout Ethiopia in 2006. The design of this installation recalls the circular shape of the Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Tens of thousands of people viewed the portable installation. Members of Sudden Flowers accompanied the exhibition in its travels and engaged audience members in dialog inspired by their photographs. We used the ritual of the coffee ceremony because we were interested in how local traditions could provide guides for how to deal with an epidemic. I helped serve coffee to viewers.
